On Tuesday 27th June, Year 1 visited Odds Farm Park to learn about the countryside as part of their Geography topic. The children petted the rabbits and fed the goats and sheep. They saw a cow being milked and learned about cow’s milk. There was an amazing adventure playground that the children played on and a sandy play area. After lunch there was a tractor ride to see the animals grazing in the fields and the children finally went to play in the soft play area with big slides to play on. All of Year 1 children and teachers had a very enjoyable day learning about and experiencing the countryside.

This is a free event for children and families to have fun during the summer.

Activities will include:

• Under 5 area (arts and crafts, sandpit, scooters and much more)
• Punch and Judy Show
• Mobile Library
• Try out basketball, golf, cycling, BMX, Dance and more
• Visit a real HGV lorry, a Fire truck and Hillingdon Youth Bus

As part of our Roman topic, Year 3 Ottawa put on a class assembly to show what they have been learning about different aspects of Roman life. Although this civilisation lived over 1500 years ago, their impact is still very much alive in our everyday lives. The pupils were happy to teach others about what it truly takes to be a Roman, whether it be soldier, civilian, gladiator or even God or Goddess! All pupils learnt their lines and truly performed their parts. They sang beautifully and confidently. Well done Year 3 on a fabulous and informative assembly about the Romans

Friday 9thJune was the NSPCC’s annual Childhood Day. At Brookside Primary, instead of walking a mile, both teachers and pupils had a blast with fun water games and activities in the heat of the afternoon. It was amazing to see how uplifting it was for both pupils and teachers alike to have an hour’s BIG BREAK PLAY! Some of the exciting activities that they participated in were pin the number pegs, balloon pop, watermelon relay and the most revered, water balloon splash. They all had a blast!

Health issues related to the current warm weather are causing our A&Es to be busier than usual, with waits of up to 11 hours in A&Es at the moment. A&E is for life threatening emergencies.  There are lots of NHS services that can help you. Knowing where to go, and when, will help you get the right care when you need it.

Your local high street pharmacy can provide advice and over the counter medication to help with hayfever.  You can also contact your GP surgery or call 111 when your GP is closed.

In this warm weather, when we also have a very high pollen count at the moment, make sure you follow our top tips to prevent yourself becoming unwell.

Pupils of Year 3 classes, Ottawa and Brasilia, had a fantastic workshop on The Romans presented by Tiberius, a Roman expert, on Tuesday, which was enjoyable for both the pupils and staff. Tiberius provided an experience for children to be totally immersed in the Roman culture and their way of living. Using maps, clothes, props, and artefacts such as coins and weapons from Roman times, the children were fascinated and excited to learn about the many different aspects of Roman life. They were particularly interested in the weaponry used in battle and the reasons why the Romans were so successful at conquering other countries. Tiberius sat children in groups and presented them with many artefacts from Roman times, and then asked them to predict what they believed each item was used for. He had both classes acting out a Roman battle and dual. Pupils also learnt about the rebel Queen Boadicea who led an army against the Romans. In the end, they were encouraged to ask questions and they were enthusiastic and participated extremely well.
