The teacher first modelled the sound /r/, encouraging the children to repeat it while exaggerating the sound so they could clearly hear how it was formed. The children then practised by making the sound together while pretending to be a roaring lion or revving a racing car, which helped them remember the sound through movement and play.

As part of UK Parliament Week and Pupil Voice Week, our pupils had fantastic opportunities to engage in thoughtful discussions and structured debates. KS2 pupils explored a range of “big questions”, including “Animals should not be kept in zoos” and “Technology in the future will cause more problems than it will solve.” Working in teams, they presented confident arguments both for and against each statement, demonstrating critical thinking, excellent speaking skills, and respectful listening. Their debates were scored overall, and pupils showed maturity, enthusiasm, and a strong understanding of how democratic dialogue works. Our Year 1 pupils also took part by holding their own class debates, practising turn-taking, sharing ideas, and learning how to express opinions in a supportive environment. It was a wonderful week celebrating pupil voice, confidence, and the values of democracy across the school.
